📍Szépasszonyvölgy, Eger, Hungary 🇭🇺

Known in English as "The Valley of the Beautiful Woman" or "The Valley of the Very Nice Woman" Szépasszonyvölgy is the place in Eger to taste plenty of local wines.

Located about a 15-minute walk from the center of town, this area has a large semi-circle of different local wine cellars.

There's plenty of choice, but you can't leave Eger without trying the "Bull's Blood" - a red blend for which the region is famous and each winery does slightly differently.

There are a few different thoughts on why this area is called The Valley of the Beautiful/Nice Woman:

1️⃣ Named for the goddess of an ancient religion (like Venus) to whom sacrifices were made in this area.

2️⃣ Named after a really nice woman who sold wine to the peasants from a seller.

3️⃣ Named after a different nice noble lady from the village.

🍷 Bull's Blood has a different, more agreed upon legend. When the Ottomans first tried to invade Hungary, they were drinking red wine in Eger. The Ottomans assumed it was Bull's Blood and were scared away, thinking they were crazy.

Eger Hungary Budget Breakdown: I spent three days

Eger Hungary Budget Breakdown:

I spent three days traveling in Eger, Hungary with my partner and our friend in mid-June (about peak season). I consider myself a mid-range traveler, meaning not super budget, and not luxury.

This is my personal budget breakdown, per person, in USD:

🏠 Accommodation (~$25/person/day): This cost covers a 2-bedroom/1-bathroom Airbnb near the main square (5-ish minute walk).

💲Budget Tip: Accommodation options tend to be either boutique hotels or Airbnbs, and Airbnbs are more affordable. A smaller studio or 1-bedroom or visiting off-peak would help more with cost.

🍲 Food & Drink (~$23/person/day): This cost covers about two meals out per day, a couple groceries, and of course some wine.

💲Budget Tip: Buying groceries and eating in more often can help save money. Eger has a couple budget food options like shawarma, langos and pizza. Making coffee at home and avoiding alcohol can also help.

🏰 Activities (~$2/person/day): This cost covers entrance fees to climb the Ottoman minaret and Eger Castle.

💲Budget Tip: Take advantage of Eger Castle's discounted entrance fees after 5 p.m.

🚌 Transportation ($0): Eger is quite small, so we were able to walk everywhere and never needed transportation. If we'd taken a daytrip, it would have been a little more of course.

Cost to get to Eger from Budapest via train was ~$7 USD/person.

📍Eger, Hungary 🇭🇺

Okay, I know as travelers we all hate the term, "hidden gem." But how else am I supposed to describe a destination that is bursting with charm and seems relatively unvisited by tourists outside the country?

I say this because in Eger, multiple people asked me how I found it. Not whether I was liking it, or how I got there - but how on earth did I possibly think to visit.

I spent three days in Eger this summer after looking for an interesting place to visit after Budapest. It's under 2 hours by train from Budapest, in the northeastern great plains region of Hungary.

You can easily visit as a day trip from Budapest, independently or on a group tour, but I highly recommend staying at least 1-2 nights.

Highlights of my visit included:

🏰 Visiting Eger Castle: A 13th-century castle famous for repelling an attempted siege by the Turks in 1552 (though later falling to them later that same century). It now doubles as a museum showcasing the history of the castle and town.

🍷 Wine tasting in the Valley of the Beautiful Woman: Eger is one of Hungary's 22 wine regions and famous for its red blend called Bull's Blood. The best place to try local wines from across the region is the Valley of the Beautiful Woman, which holds several local wineries.

🪜 Climbing the Minaret: Hungary was under Ottoman rule for a little over 150 years. Today, there are three surviving Ottoman minarets in the country. One of them is in Eger, and you can climb to the top of it.

Eger also makes a good base for hiking and exploring thermal baths in the surrounding area.
